“Keep it Safe! Building Strategies for a Sustainable Film Heritage” SAFE Final Conference

From January 28 to 30, 2026, the University of Udine hosted the final conference of the PRIN PNNR SAFE project – The Sustainability of Italian Film Heritage, entitled “Keep it Safe! Building Strategies for a Sustainable Film Heritage.” The event represented the culmination of a research project dedicated to the sustainability of archival infrastructures and the preservation of non-fiction and non-theatrical audiovisual heritage. It stood out for its strong international focus, confirmed by the participation of two keynote speakers who opened the debate on the global challenges facing the sector: Matěj Strnad (Národní filmový archiv, Prague / FIAF Programming and Access to Collections Commission) and Céline Ruivo (Université libre de Bruxelles). During the conference, representatives from key organizations will speak, including: The Luce Historical Archive, The Friuli Film Library, The Home Movies Foundation – National Home Movie Archive, The Cinescatti Archive of Lab 80, The RI-PRESE Archive. This network represents the variety and richness of Italy’s heritage, bringing concrete stewardship and fund management strategies to the public’s attention. Finally, the results of the environmental monitoring conducted in collaboration with Tecno.el were presented, which made it possible to analyze the conservation microclimates of the partners’ storage facilities, such as those of the Cineteca dello Stretto and the Media Lab in Udine.
