SAFE contribution at “Original Copies: Digital Tools for Preservation in Cinema and the Other Arts”

Rossella Catanese and Valentina Valente of the University of Tuscia participated in the International Conference “”Original Copies: Digital Tools for Preservation in Cinema and the Other Arts””, organized by the Department of Humanities of the University of Turin in partnership with the “”La Venaria Reale”” Conservation and Restoration Center.
The SAFE group’s presentation, entitled “”SAFE Strategies: Ecological and Ethical Challenges in Audiovisual Digitization””, offered a critical reflection on the environmental, ethical and epistemological challenges posed by digital preservation practices, presenting its research framework dedicated to the sustainability of Italian film archives. In particular, the paper highlighted the paradox between the promise of digital technologies and their effective long-term sustainability, marked by energy-intensive infrastructure, obsolescence of formats and complexity of conservation models. Finally, the speech invited to rethink the ethics of preservation, integrating technological innovation, environmental responsibility and inclusive care of audiovisual heritage, in line with the research objectives of the SAFE project.
