AtlaSafe

AtlaSafe is a digital environment for presenting multiple research outcomes, divided into three sections: The State of Sustainability (the results of the Survey); Film Environments (the findings from the environmental monitoring of preservation infrastructures); Loci Filmici (the mapping of the archives involved in the project).

The first section presents a graphic-visual re-elaboration of the data collected through the SAFE Survey. The graphs organize the data from over twenty archival institutions into four distinct areas, composing a mosaic of their different subjectivities and policies, as well as their infrastructures, archiving practices, and digital preservation strategies.

The second section reports on the annual environmental monitoring of five preservation spaces, conducted in collaboration with Tecno.El. The monitoring involved the analysis of the microclimate of the storage facilities and the development of vinegar syndrome, and also aimed to foster awareness and the adoption of good practices.

The third section geolocates the archives surveyed to date. An unprecedented, plural, multi-territorial archival community takes shape, encompassing both long-established and younger institutions, united by their focus on non-fiction and non-theatrical cinema. Through this mapping, a heritage spanning the entire Italian peninsula emerges, revealing an unexpected scale (more than one-third of a million – 343,000 – films preserved).
